GEORGE    FODEN

INTRODUCTION

George and Hannah FODEN were the parents of Mary.

George FODEN was born about 1756 and Hannah in 1767 in Orton on the Hill Leicestershire. To date we have been unable to locate a marriage record for George and Hannah. We have, however, discovered a Will for George.

Finding this enabled us to confirm that they were definitely Mary's parents. It also revealed that George was a Yeoman and a man of wealth and property. George also refers to his grandson George Foden Baldock.

As well as Mary, they also had three other daughters, Sarah baptised in Lea Marston on 14 December 1806, Charlotte born 1800 and Hannah who died young (possibly in childbirth) leaving a daughter Eliza (born 1819) who was brought up by George and Hannah.

Found in Warwickshire Baptism records on the page opposite to the record of the birth of Charlotte Foden BALDOCK we find Eliza's baptism record:

Eliza Johnson BB (base born) daughter of Hannah FODEN of Whitacre Heath, Kingsbury baptized 14 Nov 1819 ?

Hannah was described as a 'higgler' (A peddler - much of the higgler's trade involved barter, rather than money changing hands and the name derives from the resultant haggling).

There are references in the National Archives to a George FODEN of Lea Marston in documents from the Birmingham City Archives:

George died on 28 September 1836 aged 80.

Hannah, however, survived a further 26 years, and died 1st July 1862, aged 95.

They are both buried at St. John the Baptist, Lea Marston, along with their daughter Sarah FODEN who died 26th October 1839 aged 33.
